Birmingham- Lower Palaeolithic. More recently, there is evidence of hunter-gatherer communities using the area as seasonal hunting and camping grounds. The area was also utilised in the Bronze and Iron Ages, these would have been Birmingham's first settled, permanent communities. Birmingham was also an important area for the Romans with at least two of their major trade and military routes, Icknield and Watling Streets, passing through the area. Evidence of Roman occupation, production and settlement has been found in several locations such as Perry Barr, Erdington and Sutton Coldfield as well as others. Since then, Birmingham has been more or less permanently occupied. The earliest known documentary record of Birmingham occurs in the Domesday Book of 1086 in which the settlement was described as a small manor. A century later, Birmingham was granted a Royal Charter which permitted the inhabitants to stage a regular market, known locally as the Bull Ring, and from there the small manor flourished and eventually became the large industrial city that we know today - complete with its 21st century Bull Ring. The last 200 years of the city's history has seen it become a major centre of innovation, immigration, social and economic reforms, all spurred on by the Industrial Revolution. By the 20th century, Birmingham had become an important national and international hub for the United Kingdom's manufacturing and automotive industries. The city is also known for the network of canals that snake their way in and around the city. Today's Birmingham is a cultural nexus which actively builds on its tried and tested cultural and industrial traditions.
